Some of the world's
greatest art treasures can be found in the museums and
galleries of Paris. Whatever your interest: Medieval, Greek,
Roman, the Old Masters, Modern and Contemporary, Fashion,
Science and Technology, can all be found in Paris.
The major art collection of the French people
is found at the Louvre which began its
collection over 400 years ago. In the Louvre, you will find
sculpture from Greek, Roman, and Medieval times. The Mona
Lisa was acquired by the Louvre over 400 years ago. There
are other paintings by Leonardo da Vinci along with paintings
by Titian, Raphael, and other Italian artists. Some of the
works include Rembrandt's Pilgrims at Emmanus,
Watteau's Gilles and Fragonard's The Bathers.
There are also fine examples of the decorative arts from
medieval time to the Napoleonic era.
The Musee de Cluny is housed
in a 15th century mansion. It houses Greek, Roman, and medieval
art objects and artifacts. It adjoins remains of 3rd century
Roman baths.
Several museums house modern and contemporary
art. The Musee de l'Art Moderne located in the
Pompidou Center houses works from 1905 to the present. It
includes works by Matisse and Rouault among others.
The largest collection of Picasso paintings is
located in the Musee Picasso. The museum
also houses works by Matisse and Modligliani.
The Musee Carnavalet houses
paintings, shop signs, and other artifacts that cover the
history of Paris. Historical documents from the national
archives are displayed in the Hotel de
Soubise.
There are two major museums of natural history.
The Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle
houses sections on paleontology, mineralogy, entomology,
anatomy, and botany. It also has a zoo and a botanical garden.
The second natural history museum, the Musee de
l'Homme houses numerous African artifacts and has a
major collection of anthropology and ethnology artifacts.
The objects displayed in the museums can occupy
you for hours and you will want to return again to make sure
you have not missed anything.
